In time of drought, turning to Native traditions to plead for rain
By Diana Marcum
Los Angeles Times - Los Angeles Times - Sun Mar 9 13:00:00 UTC 2014
The woman in line at the bank said she had already sold all her cattle and was now selling her land. It was one too many tales of drought hardship for Laynee Reyna, also known as She Who Makes Things Happen — a name given to her by a shaman decades ago. She felt a great spirit seize her. In the crowded bank lobby, the 79-year-old raised her arms.

Divorce Rate in America Increasing as Economy Recovers | First to Know
University of Maryland sociologist Philip N. Cohen recently published a paper that examined what effects the economy played on the divorce rate in America. There was a drop in divorces during the recession, but Cohen believes this may have occurred because divorce was too expensive — not because couples had grown stronger during those stressful economic times.

MTV’s ‘16 and Pregnant,’ Derided by Some, May Resonate as a Cautionary Tale - NYTimes.com
Ms. Kearney and Mr. Levine examined birth records and Nielsen television ratings, finding that the rate of teenage pregnancy declined faster in areas where teenagers were watching more MTV programming — not only the “16 and Pregnant” series — than in areas where they did not. The study focuses on the period after “16 and Pregnant” was introduced in 2009 and accounts for the fact that teenagers who tuned in to the show might have been at higher risk of having a child to begin with.
